Mounting Costs for Rural Landowners | Chris Atkinson, Melrose
October 2, 2026 Letters From Neighbors

The cost to mow grass and maintain a farm continues to rise.  Our place in central Minnesota is about seven to eight acres, with approximately four acres of mowed land.  Based on current diesel prices, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain acreage.

The current cost of diesel fuel in Minnesota is 6.22 (AAA Minnesota), October 1, 2026.  Using the Farm Calculator Hub, it costs approximately 16.50 to mow our four acres based on current fuel costs.  This estimate does not include other expenses like oil and grease.  Imagine a farmer with 100 acres pulling an implement, the cost in fuel alone sits at 165.00.  Most farms today exceed 100 acres.

Erik Osberg believes in a strong rural economy, and he is a problem solver that wants to listen to farmers in western Minnesota.  Currently, he is traveling across our district to meet with us rural landowners, to empathize with a difficult situation and discuss options for improvement.  While there are many factors that go into the cost of diesel fuel, a first step in any difficult situation is to come to the table and talk.  Erik Osberg is traveling the 7th Congressional District right now.  I encourage those that are able to meet with him at one of his upcoming Fish Fry Town Hall tour stops.  If unable to travel, learn about Erik online at erikosberg4congress.com.  He welcomes feedback.

Erik Osberg for Congress because “We Can Do Better.”
