Ground truthing

Yellow Medicine County Minnesota Farmers Union meeting

by Erik Osberg on 8/25/25

I attended a Yellow Medicine County Minnesota Farmers Union meeting Sunday evening. It was held at a Century Farm south of Granite Falls. I was there to listen & learn. Once again, it was nice to see some familiar faces. The evening began with a hearty hotdish meal complete with homemade desserts. Minnesota Farmers Union is a nonprofit membership organization that “works to protect and enhance the economic interests and quality of life of family farmers and ranchers and rural communities.” Membership is open to anyone.

MFU Vice President Anne Schwagerl was on hand to give the local unit organization, legislative, and general updates. Anne is a farmer herself and operates in Big Stone County. She talked about the importance of what she called “ground truthing” getting policy makers to visit farms. Put boots on the ground so to speak. We couldn’t agree more. I’ve talked a lot on the campaign trail about staying grounded in truth & creating a shared reality. Once we’ve done that, we can move forward with solutions. Anne said these farm visits show people in power “how decisions being made in St. Paul, Washington D.C., New York City affect us here in rural Minnesota.” Other topics included the negative impact of tariffs & the loss of agricultural institutional knowledge at the federal level. It is hard to make data driven decisions when data is lost. Huge thanks for allowing me to sit in on the meeting & huge thanks to our gracious hosts. They even had an Erik Osberg for Congress sign in their yard.

We have now visited 37 of the 38 counties in Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District.

I spent Saturday morning at the Traverse County Fair in Wheaton, MN. This means we have now visited 37 out of the 38 counties in Minnesota’s 7th Congressional District. Norman County is the only county we have yet to visit.  A local news reporter stopped by the Traverse County DFL booth while I was there and we had a nice long chat. I even got to play in the mud a little bit. I saw a group trying to push a car out of their parking spot (they've gotten a lot of rain in their neck of the woods) and it looked like they needed 1 more to push. I jumped in and the only spot left was in front of the tire. The good news is we got the car unstuck. The not-so-good news is I got a little mud slung my way. Oh well, I suppose I'd better get used to that. 🙂 We will be back in Traverse County again. Will let you know when as soon as we have more info.

36 counties visited, 2 to go

Roughly 200 people gathered in Fergus Falls, MN for an Otter Tail County DFL event

by Erik Osberg on 8/19/25

There were lots of highlights last week. The most energizing may have been the Otter Tail County DFL Fundraiser on Thursday evening. Kudos to all the folks who organized an incredible evening of connections, conversations & community. Spies Riverfront Park in downtown Fergus Falls, MN provided the perfect venue for a picnic. Huge thanks to Bossy Babes BBQ for serving up great eats & thanks to Tom & Suzi Music for the tunes. Roughly 200 people were in attendance & the lineup of speakers was impressive. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison was the headliner. Former Fergus Falls Mayor & author Ben Schierer gave fantastic introduction. Danelle Hubert of Upstream MN talked about the power of stories. The folks from FairVote MN talked about Ranked Choice Voting, Senate District 9 DFL Chair Cornel Walker mc'd & the new Otter Tail County DFL Chair talked too.

I was allowed to speak as well. There was a vibe in the air that I wanted to make sure we harnessed. I like to think those in attendance left with a hope that despite the darkness, brighter days lay ahead. I like to think they left with a belief that WE CAN DO BETTER. Once again, very grateful for the opportunity & hospitality. Thanks for all the support.

Wilkin County DFL Ice Cream Social
Wilkin County DFL Ice Cream Social

I was in Breckenridge, MN last Tuesday night. Even though this was my 1st visit to Wilkin County, there were familiar faces. I was able to connect with plenty of new folks too. Over 50 people gathered in a beautiful backyard for the Wilkin Co. DFL Ice Cream Social. I was allowed to address the crowd and take questions. One of my favorite parts of the evening was when people stood up to share why they were there. I heard things like "widen the net" & "be a voice for the voiceless".

Every day brings a new atrocity. Every day brings a new headline even more unbelievable than yesterday's. We need to recognize that this is by design. It can create fatigue & complacency. The way we win is by putting our head down and forging ahead, despite the chaos. Despite the uncertainty.

That is why this campaign is committed to making real connections with as many people as humanly possible here in western Minnesota. Super grateful for the invitation. Super grateful for the support.

Douglas County DFL booth at the Douglas County Fair.

Saturday was another super cool moment. I was scheduled to be at the Douglas County DFL booth at the Douglas County Fair from noon-2pm. I was plenty early, but had to park a long ways away. I walked up to the booth at exactly 12:00pm. There was about a dozen people there to greet me. I started fielding questions, comments, concerns & likewise. Topics ranged from health care, crop prices, positive vs. negative, courage, education, strategies, etc. The 1st 45 minutes to hourish were in a group setting. After that, it became more 1-on-1. Huge thanks to the Douglas County DFL for the work they do and for allowing me to be there. Huge thanks to everyone who showed up. We really appreciate your support.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

We will be back on the road this weekend. We will be in Traverse County (#37) on Saturday, Yellow Medicine County on Sunday and then we have 2 very special events next week.  We are having Community Fish Fry #3 in Pelican Rapids on Wednesday, Aug. 27th & a Community Social event  on Aug. 28th in Atwater, MN featuring The Cactus Blossoms. finishing summer strong

Team Osberg in the Upsala Heritage Day Parade

by Erik Osberg on 8/11/25

As summer starts winding down, I start looking forward to football. My schedule is gonna change a bit in the coming weeks as I start coaching at the jr. high level again. Practice starts August 18th.

One of the lessons we try to teach the kids is putting the team 1st.

On this campaign we believe the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. On this campaign we believe the WE is greater than the ME.

we can do better
we can do better

On Tuesday evening I shared the stage with some heavy hitters. The 2025 MN DFL Senate District 15 Corn Feed in Redwood Falls was one to remember. The speaker lineup went as follows: MN Gov. Tim Walz, US Rep. & US Senate Candidate Angie Craig, MN Lt. Gov. & US Senate Candidate Peggy Flanagan. US Rep. Candidate Jake Johnson MN-01, then yours truly Erik Osberg, US Rep. Candidate MN-07. I like to think I held my own. We've come a long way in less than 5 months.

Hundreds(?) of folks were there to connect, break bread & build community. There were also a number of State Reps, State Senators, State DFL Staffers & other dignitaries who presented or were in attendance. We are truly grateful for all the encouragement, conversations, ideas & support we got last night. It really is the fuel driving us down a different path to a different outcome. Huge thanks to all the organizers, Theresa Keaveny, Al Kruse, Lori Sellner, Anita Gaul, Dan Peterson & others. Keep up the good work everyone!

Corn Ice Cream at Minnesota Farmfest

I also attended my 1st Minnesota Farmfest in Morgan, MN on Tuesday. Made connections, listened lots & learned a thing or two as well. One of my favorite conversations was with the folks at the Minnesota Corn Growers Association tent. I was able to have a good chat with the Chairman of the National Corn Growers Association. Also got to enjoy some corn ice cream. Fun fact, the serving dish & spoon are made with corn too! Stopped by the DFL Booth, Minnesota Farmers Union & Farm Bureau spots as well. Agriculture is woven into the fabric of our communities. Our pledge is to do our best to represent this important industry.

We had a great meet-n-greet at Intuition Brewing in Willmar, MN on Sunday.

THANK YOU KANDIYOHI COUNTY!

Wowsa, we had an amazing meet-n-greet in Willmar, MN on Sunday. There was music, food, beverages, questions, ideas, conversations, connections & community. By the end we had 50+ people there. The room had energy and it felt good. Did we solve every problem in the world? Nope. But we did create something super important... HOPE. This was the 67th event we've been a part of since announcing on March 11th. That's 152 days ago, and we feel more energized now than when we started. Days like today give us the fuel we need to forge ahead. Huge thanks to Chris Radel, Deb Oyen, Fernando Alvarado, Intuition Brewing (they do not endorse any political party or candidate) and everyone else who helped make this happen. Chris did a great job MC'ing, he would make a great hype man on our tour. We will be back in that neck of the woods on Aug. 28th for a special event in Atwater, MN featuring The Cactus Blossoms. You can register below.
