making time

I snuck in an hour of fishin’ last week.

by Erik Osberg on 8/05/25

In 2011 I started a fishing/hunting related brand. The idea was to encourage people to “make time” to enjoy the outdoors. Our slogan was “it’s not about having time, it’s about making time.” We have attached that mentality to this campaign. We all get 24 hours in a day, what we do with that time is up to us. As for me, I choose to keep creating real connections throughout western Minnesota. Since announcing on March 11th, we have now made 62 campaign stops under our new slogan; “we can do better.”

In my humble opinion good leadership means taking more than your fair share of the blame when results don't meet expectations. It also means giving others credit when things do go well.

Last week the July Jobs Report was released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the numbers weren't good. Nonfarm payrolls growth totaled 73,000 in July, well below forecasts. In addition, the May & June numbers were revised lower. With the exception of the pandemic era, this was the worst Jobs Report since the great recession. As a former financial advisor & banker, I understand the math.

In response to the report, the current Administration called for the firing of the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. We are living in a revisionist era.

We need real solutions to real problems in Washington D.C. We need leaders who hold themselves accountable for their actions.

That is why I am running for Congress.

MN Lt. Gov. & U.S. Senatee Candidate Peggy Flanagan was honored at the Upper Sioux Community Wacipi

On Saturday, I attended my 1st ever Traditional Wacipi, aka Pow-Wow. The event was hosted by the Upper Sioux Community near Granite Falls, MN. When I say you could FEEL the significance of the event, I mean it. The pounding of the drums thumps in your chest. The rhythm of bells rings in your ear. A spiritual connection is created between those in attendance, the earth below their feet & the sky above their heads. The Grand Entry is a can't miss. It marks the beginning of the Wacipi with all the dancers in full regalia. I was fortunate enough to experience an extra special moment. Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe & candidate for U.S. Senate, was allowed to address the crowd. Then one by one people entered the circle to shake her hand. After that a song broke out and a processional made it's way around the arena with more people joining in along the way. During the opening prayer, an elder referenced "one heart, one mind". One of the goals of this campaign is to connect with the tribal communities in western Minnesota. Over the weekend, we took a step towards that goal. Mark your calendars, the 2026 Wacipi is August 7th-9th. We plan on being there. As they say "Today we gather. Tomorrow we'll remember."

I attended two Minnesota Farmers Union events last week. One was in Wadena County, they other in Todd County. MFU President Gary Wertish was at both events & MN Dept. of Ag Commissioner Thom Petersen was at one of them. They shared their thoughts of the state of farming. Commissioner Petersen talked about the importance of farming in Minnesota. He pointed out our state ranks in the top 10 in pretty much every major ag commodity. We have some industry leaders in the private sector too. He talked about current crop conditions. He said from what he hears/sees it should be a good harvest across the board. One challenge has been to get hay put up. That being said, crop prices are really hurting. Commissioner Petersen also said that mediation notices were up in June when compared to years past. (These notices inform farmers of a creditor's intent to take action against their agricultural property.) Just one indicator that farms are facing challenges. We talked about localizing food supply and a potential resurgence in smaller farms. MFU President Gary Wertish gave an update on the Farmers Union Processing & Meats facility in Staples, MN. This project is an example of collaborative partners coming together to create local solutions. Ground broke in June and construction is expected to be completed in January 2026. The intent is to create a USDA inspected slaughter & processing site that gives area farmers & cooperatives an alternative when it comes to meat processing. Both Commissioner Petersen & MFU President Wertish touched on the need to restore stability as it relates to trade partnerships/relations. Wertish also encouraged people to keep showing up and sharing their stories. "Government is only as good as we make it." he said. We couldn't agree more. I was also allowed to introduce myself as a candidate for Congress. Thanks for the great meal & conversation.

The event in Todd County included a tribute to Alan Perish who passed away in May. Alan was a champion for rural places. He cared deeply about the success of small family farms. He was an advocate, tireless grassroots organizer and steward of the land. MN Farmers Union President Gary Wertish was there to share memories & stories of Alan. He encouraged those in attendance to carry on Alan's legacy of service. A.J. Peters shared a very poignant memorial. "Alan’s regional events, ranging from picnics to conventions, fostered a sense of unity and engagement among local farmers and supporters. He wasn’t afraid to bring tough issues—like antitrust concerns and dairy consolidation—before the broader community, helping shape meaningful legislative dialogues. Alan embodied the ethos of responsible land management, always guided by deep respect for his rural Minnesota roots." said Peters.

Other family & friends shared their stories of Alan too, some were very emotional.

There was quite a spread of food. I was especially excited to see brats on a charcoal grill. I was also really excited when I heard some good ol' fashioned polka being played. Can't go wrong with Roll out the Barrel . I also met a birthday buddy of mine.  Thanks for having me & allowing me to introduce myself to more of my neighbors here in western Minnesota. We are connecting the dots.

I also attended a potluck on a farm near Fulda, MN last week. As well as a County Fair. Both were great opportunities to listen & learn.

surviving the squall

Community Fish Fry at Phelps Mill Park in Otter Tail County, MN.

by Erik Osberg on 7/28/25

On Thursday night we hosted a Community Fish Fry at Phelps Mill Park in Otter Tail County, MN. The forecast showed rain around 6pm. But we forged ahead, rain or shine. I kept checking the radar throughout the day. It never improved. But we forged ahead. By 5:30pm the fish fry was well underway. A little over 50 people were there. Most everyone had gotten a plate of fish and the conversations were flowing. At 5:40pm I told folks I would address the crowd soon. A buddy of mine said we had about 5 minutes before wind and rain came. Volunteers scrambled to secure the food service and I started talking around 5:45pm. I was able to share a little about myself, lay out some of the vision for our campaign, and opened the floor to questions. Right about that time, the wind really picked up and heavy rain started to fall. We forged ahead. I was literally on my tippy toes, using as loud a voice as possible to talk over the weather. The questions kept coming, so I kept answering them. We talked our way through the squall. By 6:30pm the winds calmed, and the sun started coming out. The moral of the story is if you can forge ahead, even when chaos and uncertainty are swirling around, you can right the ship.

One question stuck with me. To paraphrase, “what do I bring to the table?” The best way I can answer this question is by sharing my strengths.

  1. Positivity

  2. WOO (winning others over)

  3. Adaptability

  4. Empathy

  5. Communication

If you are looking for a positive, persuasive, empathetic communicator who can adapt, good news. I’m your guy.

We have now made 57 campaign stops since announcing on March 11th, 2025 and we have visited 35 counties. (Only 3 more till we've been to all 38 in Minnesota's 7th Congressional District.)

On Sunday, we visited the Marshall County Fair. I was really impressed. I felt there was a nice balance between new & historic. The carnival games/rides looked top notch. There were tons of food booths. And The Woodpicks provided the perfect background sounds (i like bluegrass music) at the Vonasek Free Stage.  Really enjoyed the Settler's Square maintained by the Marshall County Historical Society. A boardwalk and old school storefronts allow you to step back in time. According to their website, the Marshall County Fair just wrapped up their 117th season. Huge thanks to the Pennington/Marshall County DFL for the invite & thanks to those who stopped by to chat. Can't wait to be back up in that neck of the woods.

Addressing the crowd at a Building Better Communities event in Red Lake, MN.

by Erik Osberg on 7/23/25

We believe actions speak louder than words.  Here are some stats since our launch on March 11th, 2025.

55 campaign stops

34 counties visited. (Only 4 more till we've been to all 38 in Minnesota's 7th Congressional District.)

1,800+ in-person connections, (we haven't met every person in every single room we've been in, but we've listened & introduced ourselves)

$67,500+ in donations (on our way to 100k)

Thank you for showing up & showing out.

Over the last week and a half, we made 8 campaign stops in 9 days. From Murray County to Red Lake County and points in between. One of my favorite parts about this campaign is the "discovery." I've seen things & been places that are new and familiar at the same time.

"Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt." - John Muir

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting with 15 folks who have been gathering once a month to share what is on their hearts & minds. I grew up on a dirt road and felt at home in the hills of southern Otter Tail County.

Our conversation felt very comfortable too. They had lots of great questions for me. Some even played "devils advocate" to test my answers. One gentleman had written a list of questions. He said he wanted to support this campaign, but wanted to get to know me first. He asked that I keep my answers short. Like 1 sentence or less. We had a rapid fire session where he asked my thoughts on what felt like 15 or more topics (don't quote me on that). I must have passed the test as he gladly took a button and posed with the others for a Team Photo.

Once again, the sticking point of our discussion landed on "what can we do?" My only answer is, work. Work harder than you've ever worked before. Keep showing up. Keep speaking out. Keep finding seeds of joy & nurturing. Speaking of which you could literally plant a tree. Run to the grocery store, buy some non-perishable food items and bring em to your local food shelf. The point is our ACTIONS will lead us down a different path to a different outcome. Huge thanks to this crew. Your honesty & hospitality are greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work!

We are gonna roll the dice and have our next fish fry outdoors. It will be at the BEAUTIFUL setting at Phelps Mill Park in Otter Tail County, MN. All are welcome to attend these free will donation event. Please register so we know how much fish to bring. We’d also like folks to bring a non-perishable food item or toiletries to donate to local food shelves.

On July 16th the Polk County & Red Lake County DFL hosted the 2nd "Building Better Communities" event of the summer. It was another great evening of connections, conversation & community. The event was held at the Landing at the Bend in Red Lake Falls, MN. An incredible venue, we would highly recommend you stop if you are in the area. Food was excellent. Kudos to State Rep. Steve Gander (R) for showing up and fielding questions. It was refreshing to hear civility, a call for humanity & the need for guard rails. I was impressed in the way he handled himself.

While making new friends is always a joy, one of the really cool parts for me last night was seeing folks for a 2nd time. 4 months in and it feels like we are already deepening relationships. Huge thanks to all those who made this event happen.

Keep up the good work!
